In keeping with its Corporate Social Responsibility, Celtel Sierra Leone on Tuesday 6th February became the twelfth Celtel operation to launch the ‘Build Our Nation’ Campaign at the Miatta Conference Hall Youyi Building. This campaign is geared towards supporting underprivileged secondary schools in the country in the form of books and other learning materials.

In his welcome statement the Managing Director of Celtel Sierra Leone Mr. Ted Sauti-Phiri said that Celtel has made another milestone through its support to education in Sierra Leone. He said that education is the key focus for Celtel’s community initiatives, and he believes that the donation of books for education is the most effective way of contributing to the development of Sierra Leone. He stressed that Celtel promises to deliver everyday benefits to the communities they serve in line with its Corporate Strap line ‘Making Life Better’. The Managing Director revealed that Celtel will be spending a total of Le 450 millions on books and other learning materials for the first year of the project, and those four schools from the four regions will each receive Le 10 million worth of books per quarter.

Vice President of Celtel International who overseas the Sierra Leone Operation Steve Torode said that ‘Build Our Nation’ campaign was first launched in Tanzania in 2004 and Sierra Leone is the twelfth Country to launch it. He noted that Celtel will be an adequate and valuable partner that is committed to its Vision of ‘Making Life Better’ within all the communities they operate.

The Minister of Education Science and Technology Dr. Alpha T. Wurie said that he was happy that Celtel has joined the Ministry of Education in providing quality education for the Children of Sierra Leone. Dr. Wurie maintains that Celtel is indeed keeping in line with its Corporate Social Responsibility as they have been providing support to communities in Sierra Leone.

His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone did the official launch of the ‘Build Our Nation’ Campaign. A raffle draw was held in order to choose the four schools from the four regions that will receive books in this 1st quarter of the campaign. The following Schools won the raffle draw: Samu Secondary School, in Kasserie -Northern Region, Malen Junior Secondary School in Malen- Southern Region, Wandor Secondary School, in Bama Konta- Eastern Region and Laura Dove Vocational school in Freetown - Western Area.

The ceremony was climaxed with performance from the National Dance Troupe and comic relief from famous comedian Vamboi.
